Celebrate Advent at the Annual Service of Lessons and Carols

JOHNSTOWN, Pennsylvania – The Joy of Advent comes to life at the Grand Halle on Broad Street on Friday, December 20, 2024, at 7:00 p.m with the Annual Service of Lessons and Carols – a cherished tradition of music and community.

This popular Advent event is inspired by the renowned King’s College, Cambridge, Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, which has been performed on Christmas Eve almost every year since 1928 and is broadcast here in the United States on National Public Radio. A diverse group of readers composed of local community members will present nine Scripture readings in the King James Version from both the Old and New Testament that foretell the coming of Christ. Between readings, community music groups will perform timeless holiday carols.

The program opens with the poignant English carol “Once in Royal David’s City,” sung by eleven-year-old Cyrus T. Brunner. Originally from Pittsburgh, Cyrus began his musical journey at just five years old with the piano, and has since added guitar and voice to his repertoire. After relocating to Somerset County with his family, Cyrus’ passion for music led him to “Inclined to Sing,” where he has continued refining his vocal talents. Beyond music, Cyrus enjoys wood crafting, computer coding and exploring the outdoors.

Throughout the evening, attendees will enjoy music led by Emily Roy, Music Director and organist for Resurrection Parish. Emily will provide pre-program music and lead carols on the Grand Halle’s historic Adam Stein pipe organ.

The program will feature stunning vocal pieces performed by the Greater Johnstown Community Chorus, directed by the talented Zing Allsopp, as well as the shimmering tones of the Glory Ringers Handbell Choir, under the direction of Lois Mock. The service will include both well-loved carols and special selections.

“Lessons and Carols is more than a concert or service – it’s a tradition that brings people together in a way that feels uniquely meaningful during the holidays,” said Kim Rauch, Board Chair of The Steeples Project. “It’s a chance to reflect on the season’s message of peace and joy while celebrating the incredible talents of our community.”
