Why did you decide to open a business in Johnstown, and specifically, Cambria City?
It kind of happened by accident. I am originally from the area. I grew up in Salix and went to Penn State but moved away after college. Last year, Mike and I visited my family and learned about this space (Backdoor Café) being for sale. We had been talking about opening our dream restaurant lately, so we walked the space. We saw a vision and decided to go for it! So, to be able to do what we love and to have the support of our families close by, made the decision easy.
-
Which item on your menu is your personal favorite?
We love our Truffle Polenta Fries to snack on as well as our new Crispy Brussel Sprouts with Pancetta Vinaigrette and Creamy Maple Yogurt. Seasonal Fall Lasagna is another favorite currently with Mushrooms, Kale, Leeks and Squash Bechamel Sauce.
-
Which items on your menu have been the most popular among guests?
Our homemade Pappardelle with Pork Ragu and Whipped Ricotta is our most popular large plate. Guests also really enjoy our homemade Focaccia served with three Spreads as well as our Smoked Chicken Pierogies. We cannot forget about dessert, our Crepe Brulee with Blackberry Cheesecake Mousse is the perfect end to your meal.
-
I notice you have a variety of martinis. Which has been the most popular?
All our martinis have been well received; however, the Blackberry Lychee has been our most popular. We currently have a seasonal Fall Spiced Cosmo that has been very well enjoyed by many guests.

What is the inspiration behind the name, Laurel & Grouse?
We took inspiration from Pennsylvania. “Laurel” represents the state flower, Mountain Laurel and “Grouse” represents the state bird, Ruffed Grouse. -
What are some of your favorite restaurants in the Johnstown area?
We are fans of Ryan’s Artisan Goods, especially for breakfast sandwiches. We also enjoy The Haven Bar and Lounge; it’s a great place to go and unwind on days off. We tend to order wings and pizza! We will also walk to The Phoenix for drinks and a bite to eat…we did that often during construction.
-
For visitors coming from outside the area, do you recommend reservations? If so, how far in advance do you accept reservations?
Reservations are always encouraged, especially if traveling from out of town. We do have our 8-seat bar available as first come first serve.
